Pythagoras House | Environmental Dwelling

Based in Whistler British Columbia, Pythagoras House is challenged by the clients desire for a small footprint both physically and efficiently. Were limited to 8oo square feet for a young professional couple and have building components that reduce energy usage.
Inspired by philosopher and theorem, Pythagoras House is made up of 2 right triangular volumes. In order to provide distinctly separate areas of the house, the two volumes are stacked on top of another to separate the bedroom from the living area. The bedroom is designed to be flexible as a day use space for working from home and offer privacy from downstairs. The client loves to entertain, and mirroring the second level triangle from the ground level triangle creates a covered outdoor entertainment space below.
SIPS wall panels are used to make the sharp corners of Pythagoras House possible and provide high performance insulation, reducing energy use. All panels are prefabricated then shipped and assembled on site, minimizing construction waste and time spent framing.
Creating a biodiversity roof component helps insulate the interiors during the colder months while intercepting the summer sun, keeping the heat from transferring inside.
Engineered wood flooring over in floor heating also increases energy efficiency, with minimal expansion and contractions with during changing seasons.
Additionally, there is an outdoor shower and composting toilet in the rear of the house that is meant to be used during the day and for the clients guests.
Cladding in charred accoya wood makes a simple yet bold statement and using a combination of these Passivhaus and LEED components, Pythagoras House achieves minimal enviornmental footprint.
